TAHITIAN CULTURED PEARLS

Tahitian Cultured Pearls, often called "Black Pearls" are found in the turquoise-colored lagoons of French Polynesia, located in the South Sea. A true andexotic jewel from the sea that symbolizes purity and perfection. Considering its rarity, Tahitian pearls have a reputation of exceptional value. They are born from the black-lipped oyster (a.k.a. Pinctada Margaritifera). These giant tropical mollusks can live upto 30 years in the wild, weigh upto 11 pounds and can grow asmuch as 12 inches in diameter. Free diving Polynesians have braved sharks and depths of upto 130 feet to harvest these mollusk. Only one in 15,000 oysters produce a natural pearl. It's inner shell was so popular with the button industry in Europe that its resource was eventually destroyed. Its only source is French Polynesia, Tahiti.
